5G Is Coming
New reports show that the new iPhones will support 5G cellular networks. Bloomberg says that all the new iPhones will support 5G with the high-end models having a faster 5G speed.
With 5G, the iPhone 12 will be able to stream videos and download music faster thanks to the faster network speed. Apple’s decision to finally support 5G in their devices means that the company is likely heading towards implementing an IoT ecosystem. In the future, you can expect more Apple devices to be able to “communicate” with each other.
A Popular iPhone Design Is Coming Back
Apple is bringing back the industrial design of the iPhone 4, 5, and the iPhone SE to their new flagship phones this year.
The squared-off edge design was and remains one the most iconic designs in Apple history. For reasons unknown (or possibly to bring it back when everyone missed it), Apple ditched the design for the rounded sides starting with the iPhone 6 in 2014. It became the standard iPhone design until now.
According to Bloomberg, the high-end phones will come with a stainless steel edge and the cheaper ones an aluminum.
Four New iPhones with Two New Screen Sizes
Apple is reported to come out with four new screen sizes in this year’s lineup. Whether they’re all iPhone 12 models is not yet known. One of the phones may be a new model that will replace the popular iPhone SE.
The specs for the new models are:
- A 5.4-inch phone, which would be smaller than last year’s iPhone Pro. It’s likely that this smaller phone will replace the iPhone SE.
- A 6.1-inch model with similar specs to the 5.4-inch phone.
- Another 6.1-inch phone with higher specs.
- A 6.7-inch phone. This would be Apple’s largest phone to date. It’s reported that this may be the iPhone Pro Max 12.

New ‘Dark Blue’ Color Option
The new iPhone 12 will come in a new dark blue color. The new color will replace the Midnight Green color from last year’s iPhone 11.
Augmented Reality Boost For High-End iPhones
The high-end models of the iPhone will get a LiDAR sensor this year. This comes as Apple is starting to invest heavily in their augmented reality division in preparation for their upcoming Apple Glass.
A LiDAR sensor can help detect objects in the room more precisely using lasers, which can allow the VR world to be more immersive for users. LiDAR can also open the door to more creative freedom for iPhone App developers.

No More Headphones Or Charger In The Box
Apple is no stranger to taking out certain things from their phones. In 2016, Apple removed the headphone jacks from their iPhone 7 and the Apple community had much to say. This year, we’ll see another thing getting axed.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will remove both a charger and headphones from the box this year. This comes as a surprise as Apple has supplied both since the launch of their first iPhone 13 years ago. However, this move might be a response to reduce e-waste.
Despite the sudden news, the new iPhones will still come with a Lightning to USB-C cable which can be plugged to a computer or MacBook (2016 model to present) or a power adapter with a USB-C port (like the one that came with the iPad Pro).
Kuo also reported that Apple will sell a new 20-watt charger separately. A 20-watt charger would be able to charge much faster than the 18-watt charger that came with the iPhone 11 Pro.
The absence of a headphone or a charger means that the iPhones may have a thinner box this year. The popular 3D concept channel ConceptsiPhone has shared a rendering of the new iPhone box based on a “highly reliable source”.
If this new design is true, that could potentially make this year’s iPhone box the smallest that Apple has made.
iPhone 12 Release Date
Apple has already announced that iPhones will be released “a few weeks later” than their usual September release. The release of the new phones is expected to follow after their annual Keynote Event which will likely take place in October. It was reported that the high-end phones will be released after the cheaper variants.
